Founded in March 2023 by Elon Musk and headquartered in Palo Alto, xAI was acquired by SpaceX in an all-stock deal on 2 February 2026 and rebranded as SpaceXAI in July 2026; the Grok brand is unchanged. The lab develops frontier reasoning models and generative media tools with the stated mission of understanding the universe. It ships the Grok language models, of which only Grok-1 was released with open weights, and the Grok Imagine image and video models, offered as a consumer product since July 2025 and through the API since January 2026.
