Founded in February 2025 in San Francisco by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, Thinking Machines Lab raised $2 billion in July 2025 in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz with NVIDIA, AMD and Cisco among the investors. The lab launched Tinker, a fine-tuning API for open-weights models, in October 2025, and released its first model, Inkling, with open weights in July 2026, followed by the smaller Inkling-Small preview.
