OpenRouter was founded in 2023 by Alex Atallah and Louis Vichy and is based in New York City. It trains no models of its own; it operates a routing gateway that exposes more than 400 models from many providers behind one chat-completions API, handling billing, failover and provider selection. It raised $40M across seed and Series A rounds in June 2025 (Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures) and a $113M Series B led by CapitalG in May 2026 at about $1.3B; in August 2026 Bloomberg reported that Stripe had finalised a deal to acquire it for more than $7B.
